Answer:- Ausable has a very intelligent mind.He does not listen to Max when he says that he entered through the main door. Ausable just goes on telling him about the balcony outside the window of his room. He gives him no time to think. He frames the story of the balcony that is nowhere. He changes the tone of his voice accordingly and manages to convince him that there is a balcony attached to the window of his room. Ausable says that somebody entered his room through the balcony enrlier and he complained to the management. This is the second time when someone has entered his room. This makes the story convincing.

Answer:- Max’s face turned black with anger as he backed swiftly towards the window. Kncoking was repeated on the unlocked door. Ausable said that the police was there and they would shoot Max on sight. Max had not expected such a sudden turn of events. So his face turned black with terror and anger.
Question 3:- How did Ausable get rid of Max?
Answer:- Ausable cocked up a story. He told Max that there was a balcony below his window. He told him that the balcony was a part of the next room. When the waiter knocked at the door. Ausable told max that it would be the police. Max was nervous. He dropped himself to the balcony through the window and died.
Question 4:- Give a character sketch of Ausable highlighting his presence of mind and intelligence.
Answer:- Ausable is a different kind of secret agent. Generally, secret agents that are described in detective books and shown in films are very smart and gun-friendly. Wine and dark-eyed beauties are associated with them. However, Ausable doesn’t present such a romantic picture. He is very fatty and sloppy. He lives in a small room on the sixth floor. Fowler is disappointed after meeting Ausable.
He says that appearances are often deceptive. This is quite true in the case of Ausable. He is very quick to react and can cook up stories that may fit in all kinds of situations. He convinces even the craftily Max that there is a balcony below the window of his room. Then he cooks up the story of the police. He tells Max that he himself has sought the protection of the police as he has an important report concerning some new missile with him. In this way, he get rid of his rival and enemy Max who jumps out of the window only to cry for the last time in his life.
Question 5:- Describe Fowler’s reaction after entering Ausable’s hotel room. [CBSE 2014]
Answer:- Initially Ausable got a shock to see Max in his room. But he remained calm. Max also had a pistol with him, so Ausable didn’t try anything fishy. He just kept his cool and fooled Max by using his brain to invent stories.
Question 6:- Why did Ausable frame the story of the balcony? [CBSE 2012]
Answer:- Ausable framed the story of the balcony to counter the use of the pistol by the rival secret agent Max to threaten him. The rival would have been able to get the important report about the new missiles if Ausable had not concocted this story.
